Bitter Taste In Mouth: Reasons And Remedies

A bad taste in the mouth can be a result of a wide range of medical conditions and even be an everyday situations. Many different kind of prescription or over-the-counter medications can also interfere with the sense of taste. The feeling of a bad taste in the mouth is usually temporary and treatable.

Bitter taste and bad breath are the normal phenomenon during and after fever. Here are some of the causes and magical - home remedies, which are helpful in such situation.

Does Cacogeusia occurs while eating?
Cacogeusia is the medical term for a bad (foul) taste in the mouth. It usually exists on its own and does not necessarily occurs when you are eating or tasting food or drink. At times an altered taste sensation, known as dysgeusia, can make food or drink taste foul, although under normal circumstances it is not offensive tasting.

Possible reasons of bitter mouth taste

  • The high temperature affects the function 'translator areas' of brain (cerebrum). Thus the sensory nerves function via the receptor on taste buds, but the brain translates it into something else, which gives us a bitter taste.
  • Bitter taste may also happen because of the excessive production of enzymes as an automatically defense against foreign micro organisms.

Tips to eliminate the bitter taste of the mouth

Toothbrush: You should clean your teeth including gums and tongue at least twice in day. You can use tongue scraper for removal of bacteria from tongue.

Dental floss and medicated mouthwash: Use of floss (stick to remove food and plaque from between the teeth) should be adopted to avoid the building up of germs in the inner areas of teeth. A medicated mouthwash should be used twice in a day to make your oral system healthy.

Baking soda: Mix a little amount of baking soda in your tooth paste or sprinkle a pinch of baking soda on your tooth paste at the brushing time. This will help you in destroying the formation of plaque and curing you from dental infection.

Cloves and cinnamon: Most of us have heard about clove and cinnamon, these Indian spices do wonder in terms of protecting your teeth from germs. All of us have clove and cinnamon at home, just place a teaspoon of either clove or cinnamon powder in your mouth 2-3 times in a day. This will give you relief from bitter taste and also give your mouth a fresh feeling for the whole day.

Citrus food: Usually when we suffer from fever we do not like to eat food may be due to bitter medicines which results to less secretion of saliva (dry mouth). To treat this condition, addition of citrus fruits and veggies should be adopted which helps in treating halitosis (bad breath) and bad taste. You can try some citrus flavoured candies, which can help you to get rid of bitter or bad taste in mouth.

Peppermint: Peppermint is used by us to enhance the flavour of food but it has a medicinal uses also. It can give a fresh feel to your taste buds by killing germs. As this will give you a temporary relieve from bitter taste you should try it with citrus food to enhance its activity of fighting with germs.

Adequate amount of water: Drinking water is the simplest way to remove toxins from body. Water helps in removing toxins from your mouth and also reduces the risk of acidity in stomach. Water can also help in eliminating the bitter taste. So to get rid from the problem of bitter mouth a person should drink an adequate amount of water.

Avoid drinking and smoking: If you want to feel fresh then try to make your mouth fresh, so to do this you should quit smoking and drinking habits because smoking and drinking too much could be one of the reasons which make your mouth unclean.

Salt- water solution: Gargle with salt water or hydrogen peroxide and water mixture to treat small oral infection. But be careful, do not drink hydrogen peroxide as it may be injurious to ingest.

Seasonal food: Avoid eating cold foods as they add blandness to meal. Hot and light foods like soup could be a right choice of food for during and after fever and flu, they increase the metabolism rate and prevent from bad taste also. Just make sure that you eat a well balanced diet to overcome sickness.
